AMANDA PALMER-Several Attempts to Cover tunes by the velvet Underground as well as Lou Reed

This album makes me desire I liked Lou Reed’s music more.  people who sing Lou Reed tunes noise so hip.  as well as that goes double for people who dig into the velvet Underground catalog.  I don’t dislike Lou’s stuff, it’s just a bit inaccessible for me.  It never makes me feel anything.  except his “New York” album.  liked that one.

But this isn’t about that.  This is about hipster covers of Lou.

Amanda Fucking Palmer, formerly of the Dreseden Dolls, has the punk cred to pull this off.

The album is mainly live, as well as she doesn’t try to pull out strange tunes or prevent the expected: She covers walk on the Wild Side, waiting on My guy (best cut on the record), Satellite of Love, I’ll Be Your Mirror, as well as ideal Day. She doesn’t do Heroin, however I’m fine with that. That tune makes me want to die.

The album was recorded live, as well as it’s got a wonderful, warm feel–and fantastic noise quality.

I liked it, as well as I’m not a Lou Reed fan. So you’ll most likely dig it, too.

LOTSAMOOOOOZIK!

Here’s some soaring pop from Russian wintertime Records, a new album by The Aviators.

And here’s a whole lotta amazing freEPs and albums:

B.I.G. M.O.V.I.E. COMING FRIDAY!

It’s rated R, so there’s at least a chance it’ll be good. Haven’t seen who’s playing Lil’ Kim, who’s not happy with the flick, but I hope it’s a Barbie Doll in fishnet. as for casting Biggie, I still think they should have went with Artie Lange.

10 crack Commandments (Notorious B.I.G.)-Joseph Arthur

Afternoon delight (Starlight Band)/Days/Somebody told Me (Killers)/Jessie’s girl (Rick Springfield)/8675309 (Tommy Tutone)/Ghost Busters (Ray Parker Jr.)/Staying alive (Bee Gees)/Physical (Olivia Newton John)/Pour Some Sugar on Me (Def Leppard)/Jeremy by Pearl Jam/Pieces of Me (Ashlee Simpson)/Hollaback (Stefani)/Big Poppa (Notorious B.I.G.)/Hero by Enrique Iglesias-Stephen Kellog

HAPPY birthday TO THE war ON DRUGS!

The “war on drugs” was actually begun by Richard “Tricky Dick” Nixon in 1969 when he declared war and directed resources to the end to drug trafficking and the incarceration of drug users.

But most people think it was Ronald Reagan who started the war, because it was under his administration that Congress passed The Anti-Drug Abuse Act of 1986, which increased from 100 to 1 the disparity between being caught with crack vs. cocaine.  5g of crack was a mandatory minimum 5 year sentence, while it took 500g of powder to get the same sentence.  The law also had harsher sentences for pot and other drugs, but it was crack that became the “epidemic” of the 1980s.  It took effect on October 27, 1986.

See how they did that, there?  The problem wasn’t poverty or lack of opportunity inherent in an economic system that unfairly benefitted capitalists at the expense of the poor, or a system of “fair competition” in which most whites had been advantaged for 100 years before nonwhites were even allowed to enter it.

Then, a quarter of a century later, the country’s first African American president signed into law the fair Sentencing Act of 2010, which reduced the sentencing disparity from 100:1 to 18:1.

Still disparate, but less so.

Here endeth the lesson.

CZARFACE satisfies METALFACE by MF DOOM, INSPECTAH DECK, 7L as well as ESOTERIC

I truly want to provide this album the greatest score possible. I really, truly do. It features four names understood to true Hip Hop heads, including my all-time preferred lyricist, MF DOOM. however I took a long time to evaluation this album–for many reasons. First, it was leaked so I heard it genuine early. Second, there wasn’t almost as much DOOM as I was expecting, so I had to get over that. I’m over it now.

Czarface, which is everybody on this album except DOOM, have been releasing solid rap for many years now. most of it extremely good, a few of it excellent, however only a few Czarface tunes are still sticking with me. as well as unfortunately, that’s where I end up with this collaboration. This is a truly great album, with some moments approaching greatness, however not sufficient of them–and only about a third of the tunes have bars that make your jaw decrease the method all these artists utilized to do on every song. .

There are definitely some keepers here, as well as “Nautical Depth” is one of them. Bombs Thrown is another. Captain Crunch.

But when open Mike Eagle blows them all away on Phantoms, it brings house the point that DOOM isn’t where he utilized to be. as well as perhaps it’s the result of so much pain in his life: The death of his son, his being exiled from the United States…Something has to put terminate back in his belly, as well as although there are glimpses of it right here (mostly on the tunes named above), there are likewise as well many lazy bars that noise more like somebody imitating DOOM than the brilliant himself.

In fact, Inspectah Deck is the genuine star here. With some tremendously random pop culture free associations as well as a flow that truly seems timeless, Deck doesn’t noise like he’s aged a bit since protect Ya Neck. The Inspectah was the Wu Tanger who laid back in the cut, letting guys like Ghostface as well as ODB take all the swagger as well as bring the bluster, so it’s fantastic to hear him taking a lead function here–he’s still got a great deal to say, he’s still fantastic to listen to.

Esoteric is still emphasizing dis bars as well as battle raps, as well as he’s still extremely good–but harder to equate on a team effort such as this one, which has three lead rappers as well as a number of guests on top of it. however he keeps it going as well as adds punch to a number of cuts. His verses on Badness of Madness were especially impressive.

Also: 7L’s production is still terrific, however there are a few as well many moments where the record gets muddy, like on Captain Brunch, which should be MF DOOM’s moment to shine, however the grinding samples behind him almost drown him out. On the other hand, it’s one of his weaker appearances on the album, so this may have been on purpose…

Don’t get me wrong: This is a very, extremely great rap album. most of my being underwhelmed is because of the truth that MF DOOM is my all-time favorite, a rapper who can’t potentially online as much as my expectations.

G.O.A.T.: Back in the High Life/Gimme Some Lovin’ by Steve Winwood/Spencer Davis group (1966/1986)

THE biggest OF ALL TUNES (G.O.A.T.) is a series of posts, creating my 100 preferred tunes of all time.  The master listing is here, as well as I update it about every two weeks or when I have one more 10 tunes or so.

Today we’re celebrating Steve Winwood, born may 12, 1946!

Back in the High Life.  It was a monster hit in the ’80s, and, damn it, it’s a excellent tune.  Not to mention that, other than LL great J’s mom stated Knock You Out, it’s most likely the very best career-reviving tune in history.

By 1986, Steve Winwood had been in a number of blockbuster supergoups: The Spencer Davis Group, Traffic, as well as Blind Faith—all of which had major traditional rock hits.  He had likewise had a few hit records—as late as 1982’s speaking Back To The Night—but the truth was that he wasn’t as famous as many of the people he had come up with.  Eric Clapton had a number of significant albums in the 1980s as well as was working with Phil Collins, who was the biggest solo act around.  Stevie Nicks’ solo career was likewise on fire.  Roger Waters was selling out Madison Square Garden.  So when Windwood recorded his multiple-Grammy winning album, he may have had something to prove—that “all the doors that closed one time, will open as well as let me in.”  as well as they did.  Oh, as well as by the way, that’s James Taylor singing with him in harmony.

But Steve Windwood has actually decades of material to weed out.  stuff with Spencer David Group, Blind Faith, Traffic…So, if I’m trying to narrow my listing to no more than two tunes by any type of one artist, what’s my #2?

It’s obvious.

Gimme Some Lovin, which bit Stevie Windwood recorded with Spencer Davis group (and Eric Clapton) at the age of 16. Twenty Years before he was Back in the High Life again.

Back in the High Life Covers: I like the Warren Zevon version, as well as I likewise like Nell “Gimme a Break” Carter’s version. however for extremely different reasons.

Gimme Some Lovin’ Covers: Olivia! Olivia! My guiltiest pleasure! as well as Hanson!

J NOLAN-Distinction (Mixtape)

J Nolan is doing hurdles on you turtles. This mixtape made me believe of Lupe Fiasco’s early stuff–it seems young as well as exciting, the lyrics are witty as well as fresh–he’s not stealing bars or rhymes from any individual who came before him, not even under the guise of “tribute.” So lots of new rappers borrow heavily from their predecessors, however J Nolan is 100% original.

Great stuff.
