How Did The Avengers get Their Powers and Name?

The Avengers are the biggest name in comic books right now, between the Avengers Endgame extended cut and all the popular comic arcs happening. many wonder where exactly all these characters got their powers from. So, how did the Avengers get their powers and name after all?  Well, we’re going to break down the Avengers and their origin. After, we’ll talk about the name Avengers and why they choose to use it. follow along, and be sure to visit Comic Years for more great content on superheroes from all comic companies!

Between the comics and the movies, quite a few changes occur. That being said, we are going to work primarily with the content in the comics, but some of the movie moments will be brought up as well. This is Comic Years after all! For now, follow along as we explore the origins of Captain America, Thor, Hulk, Iron Man, Black Widow, and Hawkeye. first up the first Avenger seems like a good place to start!

How Captain America gets His Power – the first Avenger

Steven Rogers is born in new York City in 1920. After the tragic deaths of his mother and father, he becomes a little empty. His purpose comes out of his talent for fine arts. He wants to put his arts on hold when Adolf Hitler rose to power in the 1940s, but because of his scrawny body and muscles, he is rejected. He won’t let it go, however, and keeps trying to get in. U.S. army general Chester Phillips is interested in his prowess and recommends him for “Project: Rebirth”. Rogers is used as a test subject for the Super-Soldier project, in which Dr. Josef Reinstein injects patients with a serum to make them stronger.

Steve Rogers is now brilliant, fast, and incredibly strong. because the project is so new, it’s hard to figure out what exactly made the serum work so well on Rogers. instead of continuing the project, Rogers becomes their poster boy for American strength. Being given a patriotic costume and public service announcement style introduction, he is given the codename Captain America. He is donned with a bulletproof shield made of Vibranium, as well as a sidearm.

How Thor gets His Powers

Thor’s powers are a bit different from the other Avengers. Thor’s father Odin is the King of the Norse Gods. When Odin believes his son, a stuck up sort of scoundrel type, needs to learn what it means to be a God, he puts his soul into the body of a medical student named Donald Blake. Blake goes on to be a doctor, and after seeing aliens invade Norway during a vacation, he hides and escapes the chaos. shortly after, he discovers Thor’s hammer, Mjolnir, disguised as a walking stick and hits it against a rock. This transforms him into the God of Thunder. After realizing who he is, Thor remembers his father’s enchantment and knows his true purpose.

It’s tricky though, because Thor has fallen in love with a nurse, and now has to step up and be a God and save Earth. His brother, Loki, doesn’t make things easy for him either. Loki, the God of Mischief, always puts trouble in his path. So, where Thor does not necessarily get powers, he does have to rediscover them. This leads him to a newfound purpose and focus on his powers and what he can accomplish in terms of saving humanity and his fellow Norse brethren.

How Black Widow gets Her Powers

Natasha Romonov is born in Stalingrad, Russia, trained to be a spy. Her power is not like the other Avengers either, as she learns these skills. She knows how to fly, spy, fight, and shoot high class weapons. Her efforts are made available by the high class technology offered to her by the Russian government. some of her best powers include access to these guns and technologies. She has wrist mounted energy weapons called her Widow’s Bite, and is an incredible martial artist.

The origin of her training comes from the U.S.S.R.’s Black Widow Ops program that trains young female orphans to be high class spies. She is brainwashed into being a spy in a Red room facility that tests her mentally and biologically. With enhancements that make her live a long life and stay young in physical aspects, she eventually discovers her past is not what she remembers. Her knowledge of her brainwashing confuses her, so she tries to do right by helping others.

She defects to the united states after falling in love with Hawkeye, who we will mention later. She experiences flashbacks that point to her orphan childhood, in which she is trained at a young age to be a spy while in the care of Matt Murdock. Soviet Union assistance always interested her because of it being her home country. Eventually, she gets tied into X-Men favorite Wolverine, and even Captain America.

Hawkeye

Clint Barton is born in Iowa and becomes an orphan after his parents die in a crash. He joins a circus and learns the skill of archery, slowly becoming known as the World’s greatest Marksman. When his mentor, the Swordsman, is caught by Clint embezzling money from the circus, he beats him to near death and leaves him behind. He joins a few more circuses, but is largely rejected for being an outcast. This leads him to a life of crime. As a criminal, he meets Black Widow, and they fall in love. He works with her to steal from Tony Stark, who we’ll talk about next, and they become more straightforward good guys after Tony beats them down.

Iron Man

Tony Stark, son of wealthy Howard and Maria Stark, is a boy genius who enters MIT at 15. He loves engineering and physics, and after his parents are killed in a car accident, he inherits the company. A prize winning physicist enlists him to make weapons, but after nearly dying in an accident, his heart is nearly in danger of total destruction. With the help of a friend who also knows physics well, he builds a chest plate that keeps shrapnel from hitting his heart. The chest plate is then combined with a suit of armor so Tony can escape a trap he is in.

He learns that the chest plate must stay on to keep him alive, so he wears the armor regularly, and under clothes when in civilian life. He charges the chest plate everyday to keep his powers from the suit. When he comes across Black Widow, he fights her and enlists her, all the while never revealing to anyone that he is Tony Stark. two people know who he really is; Pepper Potts, his love interest and secretary, and his chauffeur happy Hogan. because of his intelligence, he uses the suit to be a skilled pilot, fighter, and Avenger.

Hulk

When experimenting with the detonation of a gamma ray bomb, Bruce Banner runs onto the field to save a teenager who drives into the blast. While doing so, he absorbs a lot of radiation, and wakes up in a strange place. He becomes a giant monster when angered, and is nicknamed the Hulk by soldiers mistaking him for a threat. When he is the Hulk, he has little control over himself, as the persona is another person altogether.

In the films, we see that he finds a way to be both the Hulk and Bruce Banner, and that happens in the comics as well.

How did the Avengers get their Name

In the marvel films, we see clearly where the Avengers get their name. After Carol Danvers leaves Earth, we see that her plane was called the Avenger in an old photo. At the time, Nick Fury has the Protector initiative all laid out. thinking Avenger was a cool name from Carol, he changes it to the Avengers Initiative, and this leads to the recruitment of all the Avengers.

The Avengers have transformed comic book fandom for good. There are a lot of comic book fans now who were not fans a few decades ago. This is because of the marvel Cinematic Universe’s ability to mix in comic content with great films and stories. The characters in the Avengers all get their chance to show how they got their powers, but it helps to have a handy guide like this one.

If you want to learn more about the Avengers, follow along with the news and reviews we do at Comic Years. There are a lot of great articles about these heroes, as well as news and information on the MCU as well. thanks for reading!

MARKLEY’S FEVERED BRAIN: BLACK, WHITE and brown

by Wayne Markley

I have been a substantial fan of Chester Brown’s work since I first read Yummy fur #1 back in 1986. Over the next 30 years, Chester brown has continued to produce a mix of both fascinating and diverse work.  From his work in Yummy Fur, which was very surreal and groundbreaking at the time, to later when he would move on to both autobiographical and historical work, he never shies away from controversy in his subject matter and he is very meticulous in his research and his storytelling.  Chester’s work is not for everyone and almost all of it is for mature readers due to content, both sexual and concept wise.  I would not think of a superhero fan enjoying his work, as he is as far from that genre as imaginable, but on the other hand I would rate him right up there as one of the modern masters of the medium.  His autobiographical work comes out of the inspiration of Joe Matt and Seth, both of whom are known for their autobiographical work (following the footsteps of Robert Crumb and Harvey Pekar) and they are also characters in his stories.  (And their work is also well worth reading as they are both terrific as Chester in different ways).  Overall I have loved everything brown has done and this is just a brief overview of his work.  I would recommended it for anyone who is looking for something different than the traditional superhero material or is looking for some very creative, and at times, painful, reading. all of Brown’s collected work, except for covers, have been in black and white and while his art style is very distinctive, it has evolved over the years while remaining one of the most unique styles you will see.

Ed the happy Clown

Ed the happy Clown ran in the first 18 issues of Yummy Fur.  The early stories of both Ed and Yummy fur were done as little mini-comics which were later collected by the late Vortex Comics, reprinting the early mini-comics in full size and then continuing the story.  Ed is a twisting and twisted story about a very sad clown called Ed whose life is filled with horrible events, including being hounded by a vengeance vampire, haunted by cannibalistic pigmies, having a penis transplant (which is so twisted I cannot describe it here is this blog), incest, and even more horrible other things happen to him.  Yet, throughout this story, with every page you never know what is going to happen next and it is almost like a automobile crash as you are afraid to look but you have to see what is going to happen next. I will note that the end of the story did seem a bit abrupt and I have read that Chester became bored with the Ed story and  wanted to do what Joe and Seth were doing with autobiographical comics so he wrapped up Ed quickly and moved on to his next phase, which started with Yummy fur  #19.  While not for everyone, I thought this was an fantastic piece of storytelling.

The Playboy

The Playboy is the next major story arc brown did that began in Yummy fur #21. This was an autobiographical story about Chester’s teen years and his obsession with Playboy magazine and the joy and guilt it brought him.  He is brutally honest about his feeling of adolescence and the impact Playboy had on him and his relationships with women.  While there are numerous books written on the relationship about Playboy (and pornography in general) impact on men’s relationships with women, both good and bad, brown never really seems to make any judgements except about himself and his own issues.  I suspect his social awkwardness (something a terrific deal of comic book creators/readers have in common) has more to do with his relationship issues than his teen years. Nevertheless, this is also a fascinating read, alas almost a 180 degrees different than Ed the happy Clown.  In the collected edition of Playboy there is a letter included by Hugh Hefner to Chester about his book and what Hugh thought of Chester’s experiences and conclusions.  Yummy fur #19-20 were a two part story about a neighbor in Chester’s boarding house that he had issues with.  With The Playboy, Chester’s art style is similar to Ed the happy Clown, but it is a bit looser as is he becoming more combatable with design and with his page layout.

Underwater #1

Next he did a book called Underwater, which ran for nine issues and, as far as I can tell, was never collected.  I know it was never finished.  It was an odd story about a baby growing up not understanding the world or langue around her (all of the text in the early issues was gibberish).  With each issue she would slowly learn more and the dialogue would become English vs. gibberish, but the pacing was very slow and brown gave up on whatever he was trying to do with this story.  By this point he had moved from Vortex Comics to Drawn and Quarterly, where he remains today.

I never liked You

I never liked You is a collection of stories by brown about growing up and the trauma and pain of his adolescent years.  While very few of us had a good time during this period, Brown’s telling of his teen years is so uncomfortable it is almost difficult to read. There are stories about bullies, unrequited love and feeling awkward.  I suspect a lot of this is because brown is telling, very honestly, what a lot of us felt growing up. A collection of short stories that may bring you to tears, and if not, will leave you feeling very sad for Chester.  A good read that can be difficult at times.

The little Man: short Strips, 1980-1995

The little Man: short Strips, 1980-1995 is a collection of material that really does not fit anywhere else and collects odd stories before Chester started doing long form storytelling.  included here are the title story, The little Man, a bizarre story; the stories from Yummy fur #19 and #20; his essay on Schizophrenia, which caused quite a stir (his mother suffered from it); as well as a mix of other short stories about life. almost all of the material here was from the pages of Yummy fur but there is enough new material as well as notes and appendixes that make it worth while to get the collection even if you have the single issues of Yummy Fur.

Louis Riel

Louis Riel was first done as a comic and was later collected into a graphic novel.  here Chester turns from autobiographical material to do a historical biography of the Canadian legend Louis Riel.  Riel, while unknown to most Americans, was a Canadian revolutionary (and perhaps a madman) and was the leader of the Metis movement.  This book ran for ten issues and was very different than anything Chester had done prior to this.  He obviously tries to do a more “realistic” style of art, which with brown is a relative term.  This is a very different book than his autobiographical material, or from Ed the happy Clown, and while it is not my favorite work from Brown, it is very well done and is a good history lesson.  I knew nothing about Louis Riel before reading this book and now I can see why he is such as historical figure in Canadian history.  probably the most mainstream book Chester has done, as there is no sex or mature content, but it is heavy on the politics.

Paying For It

Paying For It is an original graphic novel where brown explores the virtues and negatives of paying for sex with prostitutes.  It is once again autobiographical and not as downbeat as The Playboy.  here he tells of the end of his long term (for him at least) relationship of his then current girlfriend and his decision that he does not want romantic love but does want physical love, or just sex, so he turns to prostitution.  He documents each encounter, the costs, how it was arranged, and his thought process as it went along.  This covers almost six years.  While there is nudity and sex in this book it is in no way erotic.  It is almost sterile, but it is also a fascinating read as he lays out his thought process, his interaction with the women he hires, the relationships he has with them, what he thinks of them, and what his pals think of him for doing this. Of course, Joe Matt and Seth are major players here as over the years the story take place they are his confidants.  They do not always agree with him about his logic or what he is doing, but it makes for terrific reading.  as with most of Brown’s work there are extensive notes in the back of the book about the subject of prostitution, as well as notes about the story explaining things that were not in the main story, as well as an essay from Seth explaining his point of view which is not necessarily the way Chester explains it in the story.  While this an odd topic for a comic book story, I thought it was great, just from a straight forward storytelling point of view.  It is not cleaned up to make anyone look better; it is just a very honest look at one man’s life.

Mary Wept Over the Feet of Jesus

Mary Wept Over the Feet of Jesus is Brown’s most current work and he returns to a few of his favorite topics; history, prostitution, and the Bible (in the back pages of Yummy fur for a long time brown did adaptations of the books from the Bible). In this book he takes nine stories from the Bible and tells the story of the women of the Bible, in particular Ruth, Bashiba, Tamar, Mary of Bethany and others. Throughout this book brown examines the Bible’s view of prostitution while continuing his argument for it.  The book is made up of ten stories from the Bible that brown uses to make his point about the virtues of sex work.  I am going to let you, the reader, make any judgments about his arguments here, but as always this book is a joy to read on many different levels.  If you like Chester’s other work, you will enjoy this book.  Also, as with almost all of his other work, there are extensive notes and appendixes in the back of the book.

There is very little from Chester brown I would not highly recommend.  Alas, his work is not for everyone, and some people will be offended by it.  Personally, I love how he has a distinct style (which can be argued is derivative of Harold Gray), and that he is both extremely thoughtful and brutally honest in his work.  While I would not agree with everything he writes, I do he think he makes a good, well thought out argument for his point of view.  His historical work is both informative and entertaining.  I always learn something from reading Chester’s work be it factual, or insightful.  If you are adventurous and are looking for something different I would highly recommend you give him a try.

Everything I have written here is my opinion and does not reflect the thoughts or opinions of Westfield Comics or their employees.  Honest.  have you read Chester Brown’s work? What do you think? What was your favorite? least favorite? I would like to know. I can be reached at MFBWAY@AOL.COM or on Facebook at Wayne Markley.  What else are you reading and enjoying? What am I missing out on? I would like to know.  As always…

Thank you.

Trailer For Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3: James Gunn explains Why Trailer Isn’t available online

James Gunn took it to Twitter to explain why the trailer for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 hasn’t dropped yet.

At the recent San Diego Comic-Con, some marvel fans were lucky to watch the trailer for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 for the first time. The trailer teased the dark origins of Rocket Raccoon (Bradley Cooper) and Gamora’s (Zoe Saldana) comeback. It also introduced new characters just like Adam Warlock (Will Poulter), High Evolutionary (Chukwudi Iwuji), and Cosmo the Spacedog (Maria Bakalova).

ComicBook gives us a detailed description of what happened in the exclusive trailer for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3.

“Guardians 3 footage sees the Guardians captured by Ravagers and Nebula reveals they have an appointment with Gamora. Peter Quill is caught all the way off guard. Peter reflects on their time together. ‘You were everything to me,’ he said. ‘I thought you were gone but you’re here and I miss you.’ Gamora tells him that person was not her. We get our first look at Adam Warlock. A grown Groot fights back to back with Quill. High Evolutionary shows up. The Guardians float on a space planet. Gamora caps the trailer by calling Quill by the wrong name and turning him down. The Guardians joke on Quill for talking to her so intimately on an open communication line and they’ve been listening all along. It ends with Mantis asking what we know about Rocket. A shot of a very young Rocket Raccoon takes the screen. much of the trailer was set to “Do You Realize” by Flaming Lips.”

Trailer for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, James Gunn explains

However, unlike Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, the trailer for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 is still not yet available online. fans were quick to air their sentiments, and one fan tweeted, “Wish we all could have experienced the @Guardians trailer yesterday,” to Gunn. “It’s truly sad how marvel holds your incredible space opera work of art from us the fans,” the tweet continues.

Gunn quoted the tweet and finally answered why the trailer is not yet available online. Gunn said,

“I wish you could have too. but it’s not just Marvel, it’s also me. Although I love the teaser some VFX aren’t where I’d want them to be for repeated views & close inspection — remember we didn’t wrap long ago — so you’ll have to wait just a beat! Sorry!”

That said, we have to wait a little longer for us to have the trailer for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. We can remember that the production wrapped up the filming last in May. and based on what Gunn said, there might be more adjustments needed before we get to see the final version of the trailer.

James Gunn also mentioned that Vol. 3 would be the Guardian’s final film. In the panel, Gunn said that when he began the arc for the Guardians of the Galaxy 10 years ago, he “had sort of an end in sight.” and Vol. 3 “is the end of that story.” knowing that this feels like it’s another end of an era. After all, Guardians of the Galaxy proved to us that comedy and humor play well in a marvel film, years ahead of Taika Waititi’s Thor: Ragnarok.

James Gunn also shared a tweet with the rest of the cast present at the SDCC. The tweet reads, “❤ (miss you @zoesaldana & @DaveBaustista) #GotG #GotGvol3 #sdcc”

In another tweet, he praised the lead stars of Guardians of the Galaxy, Chris Pratt, and Zoe Saldana, for being his collaborators in his MCU journey.

Expect the trailer for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 to drop very soon! The film will hit the cinemas on may 5, 2023.

Chris Pratt showed support For Tom Holland during Sony and Disney drama

Tom Holland and Chris Pratt are both well-known for their appearances in a variety of marvel films. Holland has swiftly become one of the most beloved actors to play Spider-Man. Pratt will forever be our Star-Lord. though the two characters are heroes on very different levels, their on-screen charisma will forever make them a happiness to enjoy when sharing scenes. Though, unfortunately, we didn’t get to see the pair interact much in Avengers: Endgame (read our spoiler complimentary review if you somehow still need a reason to see it). While we know the pair has acted alongside one another for Marvel, some fans may not know that they’re starring in another film together. Onward, a soon-to-be-released animated film features the pair as the two lead voice actors. considering that they’re back out doing press together, plenty of red-carpet questions have focused on the duo’s past. One quick interview with variety revealed that Chris Pratt was a big support for Tom Holland during the Sony and Disney drama in 2019.

Chris Pratt shows Some support For Tom Holland

Fans anywhere were pretty upset when it was announced that Marvel/Disney couldn’t reach a deal with Sony for the future of Spider-Man. we all had to deal with the fact that Tom Holland’s Spider-Man would have to take a different route than the MCU. While it was a big bummer for audiences, we can only imagine what a hard time it need to have been for franchise-lead Tom Holland. It’s been evident from his press excursions and general public identity that he loves being a part of the marvel family. Fortunately, he had some support from fellow marvel brother, Chris Pratt. In this quick clip from Variety, Tom Holland says that Chris Pratt gave him some support during the hard time.

In the clip, Holland says that he and Pratt are “good buddies”. a lot more than that, Pratt was briefly his own superhero. Tom Holland had the chance to tell Chris Pratt about the Sony and Disney news. He says that everyone was very supportive. Though, Pratt reassured Holland that the production break-up wasn’t going to happen and that everything would get figured out. and if it didn’t? He knew that Holland would be fine. Well, we’re certainly pleased that it all worked out, even if Holland would have gotten through it no matter what!

Holland and Pratt sharing the screen again. image by means of Pixar & Walt Disney Pictures.

Spider-Man and Star-Lord will continue On With Marvel

For fans of both respective actor and their films, you certainly haven’t seen the last of them. Spider-Man is staying in the MCU. A third film featuring Holland’s Spider-Man will be produced by Kevin Feige. A third Guardians of the Galaxy film is also on our radar, with an expected release in 2021. and if you can’t wait that long for a dose of Tom Holland or Chris Pratt, you can support their film Onward, which will release in March of 2020!

What marvel Comics You ought to read This August

We’re practically at the end of summer, but that just implies it’ll get much hotter before the fall. Fortunately, we have plenty of reasons to stay inside: comic books! marvel has a lot going on, between Empyre and leading into X of Swords. This August is a busy month, with plenty of graphic novels and single issues from marvel Comics to read, but here are some you ought to read best away.

Since we’re putting Empyre into checklists, it’s a bit harder to identify single issues without them all being X-Men (which I am always tempted to do). What August marvel Comics you ought to read comes down to nostalgia, energy, and a momentous development.

An Interactive graphic Novel? The Cursed Swords Logbook wishes to Redefine The graphic book Experience

You may have already heard of interactive graphic novels – or IGN for short. For instance, The boat is an exceptionally immersive on the internet comic experience. The Land of the Magic Flute retells Mozart’s opera in a stunning, contemporary way. even marvel tried something similar: on the internet movement comics. Some worked, like Spider-Woman (the character of the marvel motion picture Olivia Wilde is set to direct, maybe). Some didn’t. In fact, not sufficient worked; it appears like some I wished to introduce right here are unavailable now. however if you notice something about the interactive graphic novels so far, it’s that they are all on the internet only. After all, exactly how can you make a printed graphic book interactive? The team at Bubba Dutch may have figured that out.

The Cursed Swords Logbook: An Interactive graphic book You Can really Hold…and Smell?

Everything about the Cursed Swords Logbook is hand-crafted – everything. even a lot more excellent is that it’s made with material precise to the 1800s, the age the story takes place. Handbound leather, cotton paper pages, etc. however the very best feature, as usual, is the art as well as the story:

As Zack Gutin, director of Media Relations at Bubba Dutch explains the interactive graphic novel:

“We online in an age where screens are the main medium. Cursed Swords is an alternate reading experience that brings pages to life with sight, touch as well as even smell. The book is a half graphic book as well as half novel. The visitor complies with the long-lost journal of a pirate in a mythical world trying to develop a much better future. Each system is hand-crafted to supply visitors with an authentic, special journey—while using special collectible quality.”

It’s an remarkable product…but with remarkable products come not-so-amazing prices. since of the production, the very first wave costs $100 for the hardcover. Additionally, there’s the softcover for $75. However, they’re only making 1000 units in this style, so it’s may someday be an incredible collector’s product too. as well as exactly how frequently can we checked out something that smells like the 1800s?

Whether you’re in it for the collectible or simply admire the hand-crafted concept, this experience is one only for those who can satisfy the cost tag. Yet, if all goes well, this won’t be the last one.

X-Men #14: X of Swords chapter Twelve Answers The final piece of the Arakko Puzzle…Or Did It?

Over the course of X of Swords, we’ve learned a lot more and a lot more about what happened to the mutants of Arakko after Okkara in half—Krakoa being the other half. There are two major questions left, however. Firstly, who held the twilight blade that ripped Okkara in half? and secondly, what happened to Genesis, Apocalypse’s wife, after she ousted him from Arakko and sealed the rift? Well, we finally find out in X-Men #14: X of Swords chapter Twelve.

From Genesis to Annihilation: how Did Arakko become part of the Amenthi Hoard.

You know it’s severe when the swords look like they’re exploding. (Image: X-Men #14, marvel Comics)

Early in Jonathan Hickman’s X-Men run, he described the Amenthi hoard not as evil, but chaotic. The Amenthi just want to destroy everything. They have no agenda beyond that. However, they are controlled. Whoever wears the Annihilation helm controls the hoard. but there’s a catch, of course. The Helm also controls and drives who wears it. In buy to save Arakko, Genesis challenges the current Annihilation. When Genesis wins, she puts on the Helm, and Arakko and Amenth become one.

When Genesis describes this to Apocalypse in X-Men #14: X of Swords chapter Twelve, he pleads with her to fight the urge to destroy. but she smiles and tells him that no one is that strong. even worse, considering that the Annihilation helm wants Krakoa, Genesis wants it too. The Helm has entirely corrupted her.

The laws of Arakko presented in X-Men #14: X of Swords chapter Twelve are Horrifying

Please don’t make a lot more of these mutants. (Image: X-Men #14, marvel Comics)

There are three major laws in Krakoa:

Mutants need to not kill humans.

Respect the land of Krakoa.

Make a lot more mutants.

Pretty simple, right? Well, as with everything in Arakko, their policies are a twisted version of Krakoa’s. and the implications must terrify the mutants of Krakoa. They are:

Make a lot more mutants.

Defend this broken land.

Destroy our enemies.

Well, that’s just great. Krakoans want to make a lot more mutants to enrich their newfound paradise. Krakoans want to work with the rest of the world, supplying life-saving medications to humans across the world. The Arakkii want to destroy everything. and then there’s the “defend this broken land” mandate. Does that indicate they will secure Arakko, or is their utmost goal to secure Krakoa too? Both are pieces of a broken land.

X-Men #14: X of Swords chapter Twelve needs to be the Last flashback Issue

and what I want a lot of of all is some sword fighting. (Image: X-Men #14, marvel Comics)

I love superhero mythos—and Jonathan Hickman has added layers upon layers to what we know about the X-Men. ever considering that house of X and Powers of X, the, I guess you could say, universe of X has gotten richer and richer. However, we got maybe a bit too much in X of Swords. lots of of these flashbacks are beautiful character pieces as well as world-building, and X-Men #14: X of Swords chapter Twelve is no different. but unless there’s a crucial piece of information, like, say, who destroyed Okarra in the first place, then Hickman and company need to get to the main course. Still, though, this is a damn good story.

More X of Swords!

Who is Isis? A look At The Characters In The Dc’s Upcoming Black Adam motion picture

Isis is one of the characters we will see in the upcoming Black Adam movie, which is just a few months away from premiering in theaters. We have seen Isis previously in The secrets of Isis and will see her next in this new movie. She possesses healing powers as the goddess Isis and notably influences Black Adam. It is likely because of the similar origin of both being slaves of the Egyptian government, although in different eras.

They would form a family and secure the city of Kahndaq and, at the same time, secure and save abandoned and enslaved children, trying to find and save Isis’s brother. They would have terrific adventures in the process with Shazam’s support.

Who is Isis?

Image: DC Comics

x

Who is this character, and what’s her relationship with Black Adam? Isis was a slave named Adrianna who Intergang gave Black Adam, claiming she was the most stunning slave in Egypt. Black Adam kills Intergang’s messenger and takes off, leaving the young woman behind.

Isis heads to Black Adam’s village, and when he sees she is not afraid, he accepts her as a refugee in his village. They would make a friendship and then a a lot more intimate relationship, marrying some time later. Black Adam asks Shazam to help turn Adrianna into one of Shazam’s champions.

To achieve this, he gets an amulet that belongs to the goddess Isis and, with the help of Shazam, manages to activate it. The moment she says the phrase “I am Isis,” she obtains the goddess’s powers. She would spend her life by Black Adam’s side until the moment of his death at the hand of one of the horsemen of the apocalypse.

Origin and Biography

Image: DC Comics

Isis’s origin is not so old considering that it originates after Black Adam’s awakening. Intergang gives Isis as a gift to obtain favors from Black Adam, along with 2000 million dollars in gold. That displeases Black Adam, who kills the messenger and leaves Adrianna behind.

She goes to the city of Kahndaq, a town that Black Adam ruled and protected. Adrianna requests entrance, obtaining authorization from the antihero to stay as a refugee. Adrianna’s courage and lack of concern were qualities that attracted attention from the beginning.

Black Adam was a tyrant who mercilessly killed villains, criminals, and other organizations at that time. He bloodthirstily murdered any individual who attacked his land. In fact, he dismembered the messenger who tried to take Adrianna and sent his parts to Intergang’s house.

Adrianna would talk a lot with him about her life and impressions. gradually she would get Black Adam’s sympathy, who would continue to speak to her. She would tell him that he could show a lot more compassion for others and show himself as a a lot more benevolent person and less bloodthirsty as he had led the world to believe. Black Adam would follow her recommendations little by little and fall in love with Adrianna, trying to find a way to give her powers.

To achieve this, he seeks the amulet of Isis buried in the tomb where he was. The charm would have belonged to another champion of the magician Shazam called Pharoah Hatshepsut, a queen of the XV dynasty. She would fight to bring prosperity and peace to her people, but her amulet would become powerless and inactive upon her death.

To activate it, Black Adam asked Shazam to use his magic to bring it back to life. Shazam would help him return the power to the amulet.

Adrianna and Black Adam’s Power Couple
Image: DC Comics

When Adrianna said, “I am Isis,” she would have the goddess’ abilities, forming a hero couple with Black Adam. She would help him keep the peace in the city, and soon she would accept Black Adam’s marriage proposal. At the wedding came several people, including the marvel family. thus began the Black marvel family, which would continue to grow after that.

Black Adam and Isis would not only secure Kahndaq, but they would also initiate the rescue of young men all over Egypt. The reason was that Isis was trying to find her brother Aron, who separated from her long ago. They rescue lots of young men in the process, healing them and taking care of them in the city until they find Aron.

Isis’ brother received much physical abuse from his captors. They prevented him from walking, which saddened Isis at the time. To help them, Black Adam made a decision to share his powers with Aron, as he had seen Shazam do at the time, and thus Osiris, the new member of the Black marvel family, was born.

Isis was delighted to have her brother safe and sound beside them. They fought to secure Kahndaq successfully from lots of attacks. However, the most significant and that would have a terrific impact on their lives was the suicide Squad‘s attack on the city. They managed to repel them without problem, but Osiris would inadvertently kill a member of this team. Amanda Waller used this fact to discredit the Black Adam family before the world. Persuasorr’s death did not affect either Black Adam or Isis, but Osiris.

Intergang tricks Isis’ Brother, Osiris
Image: DC Comics

Osiris is dismayed, and a crocodile named Sobek appears in the city. Sobek tells Osiris that if he is so disturbed, he must return the powers to Black Adam. Osiris listens to him; at that moment, the crocodile eats him. Sobek was one of the four horsemen of the apocalypse Intergang sent to kill them.

Black Adam defeats Sobek destroying his jaw, and later, he goes to Intergang’s house to avenge Aron’s death. However, the rest of the horsemen would be waiting for them, having an all-out battle. The horseman of pestilence would contaminate both Adam and Isis. Isis would turn away the effects on Black Adam, and before dying, she would tell him to forget his benevolence recommendations and never show mercy to anyone.

Isis would die at that moment, and Black Adam would go into a deep depression. He would seek to revive her by any indicates possible. Black Adam would go through several cities where various heroes, including Batman and Shazam, enjoyed after him. They needed to stop Black Adam from causing damage in a fit of anger and sadness.

Black Adam would devote himself to reviving his wife, his first attempt at the source of Lazarus of Ra’s Al Ghul. Iris would return to life momentarily, but she could not resurrect as her body was missing a finger. Black Adam would go to one of doctor Fate‘s versions, Felix Faust. Faust would tell Black Adam that he must again collect the amulet of Isis that was divided into four parts.

Faust temporarily restored Black Adam’s powers, which he had lost for unknown reasons, and told him to avoid using them too much or Isis wouldn’t resurrect. Black Adam got the fragments and took them to Fate’s Tower, but he told Black Adam he had abused his powers and couldn’t revive Isis.

Faust’s control Over Isis
Image: DC Comics

That was Faust’s deception, who cast the real spell to revive Isis sometime after Black Adam left. He cursed to bind Isis to himself and bring her into submission. Isis was forced to do what Faust wanted, even paralyzing her to sleep with her.

Isis would not stay quiet and sent signals to Black Adam using her powers. She showed a bloody flower to this metahuman, and he soon understood who she was. She would continue to send clues, one of which was roses that formed Shazam’s lightning bolt and indicated where she was.

Black Adam went to the place immediately, and upon finding Faust with Isis, he released her from the mystic’s control and was reunited with his wife. However, scenarios would have radically changed Isis. She castrated doctor fate for what he did to her, showing little mercy for him.

They would unite in a plan to cleanse the entire world, imparting their justice, as Black Adam would have initiated at the time. Black Adam and Isis would attack the rock of Eternity, Shazam’s location. They eradicated him from the place, leaving a sad Billy on earth.

The Justice society united to fight Black Adam and Isis and help Billy in the process. However, everything became a lot more complicated when Mary marvel joined them in their cause, making the fight a lot more and a lot more difficult. This trio would defeat them one by one. Isis would even throw Mr. Terrorific into the mist in the eternal stone, a place from which no one has returned so far.

Image: DC Comics

The fight continued transporting everyone to earth and Black Adam’s home city. Citizens supported him and Isis upon return, cheering them on in the battle. At that time, Isis would eliminate the citizens, pointing out they were part of the planet’s corruption.

Black Adam Takes Isis’ Powers
Black Adam realized that Isis was no longer the partner he loved but was corrupted by her power. He began to immobilize her and asked Shazam to remove her powers. Black Adam finally managed to immobilize her, allowing Shazam to remove her powers and turn them into stone.

After the battle, the Justice society of America left them in place. However, a sinister shadow appeared and would declare that he already had his next champions. It was Osiris who took the statues to a hideout he had together with Deathstroke. The latter wants these two magical beings to be his titans and Osiris to complimentary both Isis and Black Adam. They release Isis; however, in this reincarnation, she cannot control her powers or body and reacts violently. She calms down, goes to the city Kahndaq and assumes her role as ruler, seeking to make this kingdom great.

Appearances

Isis appears in all the comics related to Black Adam’s story. She narrates her story with the antihero. Isis would have a couple of appearances in a participation show called The secrets of Isis. She also had a remastering in 2006 and then moved on to the version we will see soon by Sarah Shahi.

First appearance: The secrets of Isis
The first appearance of this character was in 1975 in the show The secrets of Isis, starring Joanna Cameron. It was the second part of The Shazam!/Isis Hour.

Appearances in the 1970s DC comics
Image: DC Comics

After this show, we would see Isis in DC Comics in the 1970s, after this company gotten the rights to Black Adam. She would appear in several DC publications after her appearance in the TV show pointed out above.

New Isis Incarnation (2006)
A new version of this character was introduced in the DC world in 2006. this one would be shown as a female version of Black Adam, as a part of Shazam. She would also have an appearance in a wonder woman comic.

The new 52
In a 2006 series called The new 52, we see this character named Adrianna Tomaz, part of the Black marvel family. A marvel Champions-style family but in a dark and twisted way.

Brightest Day
This appearance took place in 2010 and lasted one year. This comic was about 12 villains and 12 heroes who were resurrected; no one knows why. among them would be Isis, and we saw several of her adventures with the rest of the characters from June 2010 to June 2011.

Isis’ Powers

Image: DC Comics

Isis’ powers are varied and may even be remarkable to Black Adam’s in some cases. She possesses several similarities, such as flight, incredibly strength, incredibly speed, and invulnerability. She also has additional powers, such as creating spells. Isis also has telekinesis (moving objects with her mind). She can also alter the molecular structure of things so that people can pass through them without any problem.

Isis also possesses remote vision, which allows her to observe distant places. She can also alter time flow, stopping and even reversing it. Isis activates her powers through a ritual, chanting mantras, and Egyptian incantations. She is one of the DC characters who are part of Shazam and Black Adam’s story.

Isis has extraordinary powers and was the person who calmed the violent spirit in Black Adam at one point. She would join him in lots of battles and moments until he died.

This character has had several appearances in the DC world in different versions and forms. now we will see her in the new Black Adam motion picture as part of this antihero’s history. Hopefully, the film covers this character’s history, considering that the doctor fate we’ll see is not Felix Faustus but Kent Nelson’s version.
