Alice Cooper #1 preview page 1

In Alice Cooper #1, rock n’ roll legend Alice Cooper was never a stranger to the mystic and the macabre. His stage shows were the stuff of legend, featuring snakes, pyrotechnics, and the invocation of dark themes and darker forces. but while he was a legend in the waking world, few knew his role as “The Lord of Nightmares” beyond it, where he enjoyed over us while we dreamed, and delivered horrors unto the deserving. Only, someone took it all away from him, cast him out of his realm and locked him away… until now. and if he’s going to reclaim his dark throne, he’s going to need all the help he can get!

“We’re doing amazing things with Dynamite,” Cooper said. “I always say that the best thing about being in a comic book is that they draw you with terrific abs! Artistically, for me there is hardly a better medium.  There is so much you can do in the form of a comic that we’d never been able to do on stage.  It’s just a different way of storytelling, and it really has practically endless possibilities.  We’re looking forward to stretching the existing boundaries of the comic medium again.  We have new stories to tell, but we’ll do it with the same theatrical, sinister sensibility that comes with the name ‘Alice Cooper’.  This is just the beginning!  Welcome to my new Nightmares!”

“Alice Cooper is one of the great, enduring rock personas, first and foremost,” says writer Joe Harris. “Alice Cooper has a fantastic visual hook, as he made use of the signature eye black that defines his character. I hope they delight in what they’ll see as a fun take and interpretation on an famous character.”

“Alice Cooper’s on-stage persona, the utmost shock rocker, is ideal for comic books,” Nick Barrucci, CEO and publisher of Dynamite, said.  “From his comic book debut in marvel Premiere to The Last Temptation by Neil Gaiman, I’ve took pleasure in the appearances Alice has made in comics.  We are ecstatic to develop captivating and hypnotic comic storylines that incorporate the Sinister Showman’s gothic flair and grandiose vision. This is going to be one hell of a ride!”

Come, accept My Words!–Beau Smith

by beloved Smith

There’s a great deal to state about living a long life as well as having experience, mainly since you’ve lived a long life, so the experiences stack up.

There’s likewise a great deal to be stated about being young as well as innocent, lacking experience…or being stupid..which most of us have been at some point in our youth.

What I truly mean is that there is a significant pleasure about lacking experience as well as the reward is earning, or gaining, understanding as you roll or stumble along with life.

A part of my younger pleasure came from books, comic books, TV, as well as movies—Popular Culture. A great deal of it ended up being benchmarks in my life that I always have to refer to. One that stands out for me is Doc Savage.

Doc Savage: guy Of Bronze Bantam books Cover By James Bama

In late grade institution I found the Bantam books paperback adventures of Doc Savage. Those novels complied with me all with junior high, high school, as well as even into college. I have to admit that the James Bama covers were what caught my eye as a youngster when I browsed the shelves of Nick’s Newsstand in my hometown of Huntington, West Virginia. Nick’s news was a cornerstone in my life where I discovered as well as bought many of the comic books that would ended up being my career.

If you’re reading this column, then more than likely you understand of the artist James Bama. The Manhattan born artist was incredibly prominent in my life since not only did he paint the incredible, eye catching Doc savage Bantam book covers, he likewise did tons of industrial paintings for toys, models, as well as other pop culture products of my youth in the 1960s. I was familiar with his Western Art as well. As a kid, his cowboy as well as western paintings were just the type of art that held my young eyes captive. It was as if James Bama had the exact same photos in his mind that I did, only he was able to put them to paper as well as canvas. I still marvel at exactly how anybody might ever draw that well. His work has always struck a chord with me, as a youngster as well as as an adult.

I feel he reached an untouched level of greatness with his Doc savage covers. exactly how might anybody withstand buying these books if they saw them on the stands? I couldn’t.

Doc Savage-The Majii as well as The golden Man

The finest part of finding Doc savage paperbacks was that the stories inside similarly matched the painted covers by Bama. The author was listed under the name of Kenneth Robeson, which many years later I found was a “House Name” utilized by different writers in the publisher’s hire. The bulk, if not all, of the Doc savage books were written by Lester Dent, creator of Doc Savage.

Dent’s stories were not written for children, meaning they were not as many of today’s books, dumbed down for kids. I likewise don’t mean they were “Adult” as far as cuss words, sex as well as gore, they were true adventures with action. Yes, there were more times than not that I had to look words up in the dictionary, however Stan Lee had me doing that with marvel Comics of the ‘60s. That’s a great thing.

Lester Dent churned these stories out. I have checked out where he composed a book a month! Each book averaged around 140 pages. There were some events where he did two a month. This is just the Doc savage books. He was likewise composing all kind of other stories as well as prose also at the time. Lester Dent was the meaning of Prolific. Others of that time were, however I don’t believe any type of others had the high material that Dent did. just my opinion.

The Doc savage books got me into the book adventures of The Shadow, The Avenger in addition to the work of Edgar Rice Burroughs. I cannot believe of much better fiction to grow up reading than these. It developed so much of my own composing profession in addition to deep respect of exactly how to tell a story full of character as well as action with intelligence.

I can keep in mind being totally stunned someday when I checked out the copyright to the story I was reading was 1933. WHAT….1933??? That was older than my parents. That got me to do some searching, which was harder method back before the internet. Being young, I was amazed that stories so great as well as so appropriate were written so long ago. Being a teenager, nothing old was cool, however I was provided a lesson in respect that day.

Ron Ely As Doc savage 1975

I cannot tell you exactly how many times I have read, re-read, bought, as well as bought once again these Doc savage Bantam Books. They are a treasure for all ages. I likewise have to tell you that in 1975 when the Doc Savage-Man Of Bronze film was released, I was skeptical. I had already been “tricked” with the 1966 Batman TV show. Tricked meaning I wasn’t expecting the campversion. Don’t get me wrong, I enjoyed as well as grew to like it of what it was, however I was expecting a serious Batman show, just as James Bond was a serious film.

In 1975 I likewise understood that innovation truly wasn’t prepared to create Doc savage on the level the books had. I understood innovation as a whole truly wouldn’t be able to bring The amazing Four, Superman, or The Avengers to any type of type of level that would be as awe inspiring as the comic books. I still feel I was appropriate in this thinking. The Superman movies were specify of the art for the time in the ‘70s, however even then I understood they weren’t great sufficient to coming close to matching what was in the comic books. I enjoyed them of what they were, however it was more settling for me than a house run. I’m extremely thankful that I have lived long sufficient to see innovation catch up with comic books being able to represent the material on TV as well as the huge screen. even more proud that I might have a development of my own represented on the TV screen in the way I produced it (Wynonna Earp). I cannot begin to discuss that feeling to you.

I recognize I may have rambled a bit in this column this week, however my primary point is that from the 1930s to present day 2018, the Doc savage books are as appropriate home entertainment now as they were so many decades ago. I don’t hesitate in the least to suggest you choosing one up as well as reading it yourself or providing it to a kid of 11 as well as letting them find the exact same thrills people of all ages have for many, many decades.

Doc savage as well as His wonderful Five

I look ahead to the possible upcoming Doc savage film starring Dwayne Johnson. I believe he is a perfect option to play the part as well as I understand innovation is more than ready. My only hesitation now is that I pray they cast his “Fabulous Five” team to match that within the books, particularly the character, Monk.

If you get the chance, discover a copy of a Bantam books Doc savage as well as delight in the very best 140 pages of action/adventure you’ll ever read.

Enjoy,

Robert Greenberger

by Robert Greenberger

Black Widow Omnibus

The Black Widow hasn’t always been cool. In fact, when she very first appeared, she was a stereotypical chilly war spy, slowly evolving into a costumed operative, before selecting to defect as well as ended up being the heroine she is today. Her origins as well as background have been modified endlessly, however Natasha Romanova has proved prominent as well as enduring, improved by Scarlett Johansson’s performance in the marvel Cinematic Universe. Her solo feature, coming in May, has prompted marvel to gather three decades’ worth of appearances in the 896-page large Black Widow Omnibus hardcover.

The material provided right here is different in style, content, as well as importance to the Widow’s life however is a vital glimpse into the evolving marvel Age during the company’s seminal very first decade. In this volume you will discover Tales of Suspense #52-53, #57, #60, as well as #64; Avengers #29-30, #36-37 as well as #43-44; subplot pages from #16, #32-33, #38-39, #41-42, #45-47, #57, #63-64 as well as #76; remarkable Spider-Man #86; remarkable Adventures #1-8; Daredevil #81; Bizarre Adventures #25; marvel Fanfare #10-13 ; Solo Avengers #7; Black Widow: The Coldest War; Punisher/Black Widow: Spinning Doomsday’s Web; Daredevil/Black Widow: Abattoir; marvel Comics provides #135; Daredevil annual #10; Fury/Black Widow: death Duty; as well as journey into secret #517-519.

Given all this, her missing pairings from marvel Two-in-One as well as marvel Team-Up can be forgiven.

Tales of Suspense #52

It all begins in Marvel’s most chilly War-centric series, Iron guy in Tales of Suspense, as Natasha shows up in America, gone along with by Boris (yes, Stan Lee or dialoguer Don Rico really utilized Boris as well as Natasha, clearly he liked Rocky as well as Bullwinkle) to kill the defecting Crimson Dynamo. In her black gown as well as veil, she was the prototypical foreign spy, looking stylish thanks to Don Heck’s art. She was back four months later, romancing circus performer Clint Barton, sending Hawkeye out to kill Iron Man. When Natasha is injured he breaks off the assault as well as in #64, we see she’s prepared to defect herself, perhaps explaining the adoption of a costume, wanting to stay with Hawkeye, who is prepared to turn a new leaf as well as ended up being a hero. (It should be noted she is not formally inducted into the Avengers as its 16th member up until problem #111, 1973, a moment not included here.)

Avengers #29

Less than a year later, she begins her long association with the Avengers, very first under Stan as well as then Roy Thomas. We satisfy the Red Guardian, Natasha’s ex-husband, as well as watch her development into a resourceful heroine, gaining the trust very first of Earth’s mightiest heroes, as well as then Nick Fury as well as S.H.I.E.L.D., a connection that grows throughout this book.

Amazing Spider-Man #86

Her growing popularity as well as background made her ripe for further exploration as well as as Stan prepared to introduce two new anthology titles, he installed the Widow in one of those berths. Readying her for this new series, she got a John Romita-designed makeover, which was showcased in 1970’s remarkable Spider-Man #86. Here’s where the hair shifts from black to red as well as the familiar black uniform as well as wrist stingers are introduced. A month later, she debuted in remarkable Adventures #1-8 August 1970, courtesy of Gary Friedrich, John Buscema, as well as John Verpoorten. She lasted a simple eight problems however was utilized to address contemporary issues, as was the trend of the time. She dealt with organized crime, poverty, as well as a dash of race relations.

Amazing Adventures #1

It is right here her longtime buddy as well as father figure Ivan Petrovich is introduced. The series experienced from a merry-go-round of creators including the appealing team of gene Colan as well as expense Everett, together with Don Heck as well as Sal Buscema. Writers went from Friedrich to Maddy Cohen (a.k.a staffer Mimi Gold), Thomas, as well as Gerry Conway.

Daredevil #81

Surprisingly, she next turned up in Daredevil #81, where she would reside as partner as well as enthusiast with problem #124, really sharing the billing from #92-107. Conway told Back Issue!, “It was my concept to team up Daredevil as well as the Black Widow, mainly since I was a fan of Natasha, as well as believed she as well as Daredevil would have fascinating chemistry.”

Bizarre Adventures #25

Her next considerable appearance was a solo spy tale in the black as well as white Bizarre Adventures #25 (March 1981). Here, Ralph Macchio as well as Paul Gulacy moved her into espionage territory, which would be revisited once again as well as again. Macchio as well as George Pérez teamed to execute a four-parter that lastly saw print in marvel Fanfare #10-13 (August November 1983). With inks or extra art from Brett Breeding, Luke McDonnell & Bob Layton, Joe Sinnott, Jack Abel, Al Milgrom, as well as John Beatty, we watch as Natasha returns to Russia, falls in love, watches him die, as well as is targeted for death before S.H.I.E.L.D. agent Jimmy Woo shows up to help.

Bob Layton as well as Jackson Guice did a fine one-off short in Solo Avengers #7 (June 1988) before she began appearing in the company’s line of one-shot graphic novels. Her very first appearances was in Black Widow: The Coldest war (1990) with a story by Conway as well as art by George Freeman, Ernie Colón; mark Farmer; mark Harris; Val Mayerik; as well as Joe Rubinstein.

Daredevil/Black Widow: Abattoir

Next up were Punisher/Black Widow: Spinning Doomsday’s web (1992) by D.G. Chichester, Larry Stroman, as well as mark Farmer; Daredevil/Black Widow: Abattoir (1993) by Jim Starlin as well as Joe Chiodo (here she’s in the white outfit, redesigned for her by Frank Miller a few years earlier); as well as Fury/Black Widow: death duty (1995) by marvel UK editor Cefn Ridout as well as Charlie Adlard. It’s nice to have these bit seen as well as long-forgotten graphic novels on hand.

Rounding out the book are a series of stories from the 1990s where you can see her connection to Daredevil stays strong as well as her work in Russia will permanently haunt her. very first up is a short story from marvel Comics provides #135 (Late August 1993) from Mindy Newell as well as John Stanisci as well as the backup from Daredevil annual #10 (1994), by Newell, Sergio Cariello, as well as rich Rankin. The latter has her investigating Matt Murdock’s death, one of many times that gambit has been used.

Journey into secret #517

Finally, she took the lead in journey into secret #517-519 (February-April 1998) as Scott Lobdell, Randy Green, as well as Rick Ketchum spun a tale including a group of dissident Americans led by WW II survivor Lottie Eikenski, who operated them from behind the scenes understood only as Ebon Flame.

There’s definitely a nostalgic touch to the very first half of the book as well as some fine reading throughout, together with terrific artwork.

THAT’S truly SUPER, SUPERGIRL!

PLUS, DC COMICS: incredibly holiday REBIRTH!

Supergirl: Being incredibly #1

DC Comics has a awesome new Supergirl four-part Prestige style series beginning in December by some significant creators: Eisner award champion as well as Caldecott Honor-winning writer Mariko Tamaki as well as Eisner Award-nominated artist Joëlle Jones. Supergirl: Being incredibly is a coming-of-age story, as the young Kryptonian teen goes with the exact same growing pains as all adolescents. except Kara has to offer with a deadly earthquake that rocks her hometown of Midvale at the exact same time. The woman of Steel has to decide: let her world die, or get rid of her teen insecurities as well as be super! This looks truly Super, full of teen angst, as well as the very first problem may be one of comics’ best-ever post-Christmas gifts. (It’s on sale December 28.) What bit art I’ve seen of Supergirl: Being incredibly by Jones is evocatively amazing.

DC regeneration holiday special #1

Speaking of DC Comics as well as holidays, it wouldn’t be a Christmas without a new comic special issue. DC regeneration holiday special #1 spotlights the regeneration titles/characters for the very first time. This 96-page one-shot features a Chanukah dilemma for Batwoman, a Flash household Christmas, question lady interrupting John Constantine’s hellblazing pagan celebration — plus the return of Detective Chimp! Also, writer Paul Dini crafts a Harley Quinn holiday tale featuring DCU guests that bridges all the stories in the weirdest, wildest way. other writers include James Tynion IV, Steve Orlando, Vita Ayala, Cullen Bunn, Tim Seeley, James Asmus, Heath Corson, K. Perkins, as well as more, with art by Robbi Rodriguez, Gustavo Duarte, as well as others. Cover by Dustin Nguyen. DC’s holiday Specials are always entertaining as well as even sometimes controversial. (I’m just happy Supergirl’s not dead anymore. Hi Mark! a lot more below.)

Aquaman Vol. 1

Oh, as well as also, the very first trade paperback collections of these new new new DC regeneration series are likewise solicited this month — including Aquaman, Batman, The Flash, eco-friendly Arrow, eco-friendly Lanterns, Justice League, Nightwing, as well as Superman. Each volume collects the character’s regeneration #1 problem as well as at least five extra issues. (Several volumes have more.) Solicited now for January shipping.

HEY NOW, YOU’RE A ROCKSTAR…

Rockstars #1

I’m not always a huge picture Comics fan. (I’m old school, so I expect a basic comic series to put out something close to 12 problems a year. I’m not crazy about creators who can’t seem to achieve that with their creator-owned pride as well as joys. Kudos to those that don’t keep their fans waiting!) however a new series jumped out at me this month, integrating my two huge hobbies (comics as well as music). Rockstars #1 by Joe Harris as well as Megan Hutchison promises to check out rock ’n’ roll’s untold “mysteries as well as secrets”. The series features Jackie Mayer, a rock nerd with a odd connection to music’s metropolitan legends as well as lost history, who finds a new pattern to a series of unsolved “groupie” murders from the 1970s that appears to resume in present-day Los Angeles. together with muckraking music writer Dorothy Buell, Jackie discovers a huge conspiracy including a legendary band, demonic possession, as well as sacrifices to the dark gods of rock. (Just one more Friday night in LA…) The art by Hutchison is both properly evocative as well as claustrophobic… in all the ideal ways! (So great of picture to supply four-page art samples in their solicitations.) as well as pluses for the female protagonists!

ARCHIE’S HERE… BETTY’S HERE… VERONICA TOO… REGGIE’S HERE… hi JUGHEAD! WHERE ARE YOU?

Reggie as well as Me #1 Sandy Jarrell cover

I’m not sure why Archie (the company) believes that a new Reggie as well as Me title (soliciting this month with 10 variant covers) will be successful, thinking about the original Reggie as well as Me was one of their a lot more tiring comics, cancelled after just #126 issues. (“Just,” he says… like anything today would run that long…) Reggie’s “Wise Guy” Jokes fared much better in my youth neighborhood, since of the snotty humor. (Although it obviously didn’t offer for beans either, being cancelled at #60. Of course, both of those titles were last seen at least 35 years ago!) This new Reggie as well as Me #1 is written by not-so-secret Archie fan (and former Archie employee) Tom DeFalco, so it stands an exceptional possibility of really being funny! artwork as well as the primary cover is by Sandy Jarrell. He’s drawn DC Bombshells, Batman ’66, Black Canary, as well as more! According to his blog, he likewise likes Jim Steranko romance stories as well as music history, so he’s alright with me! This appears like fun, so I’ll be choosing it up!

Betty & Veronica: new Riverdale Cover Book

I’ll likewise be getting these two new cover collections: Archie: new Riverdale Cover book as well as Betty & Veronica: new Riverdale Cover Book. I’m guessing that the Archie people in new York heard me screaming about not being able to pay for all of the B&V #1 variations a month or so back as well as wished to shut me up! (I am quite loud when I requirement to be, in spite of my mild-mannered disposition a lot of days.) quite simply, these gather all of the cover art from (respectively) Archie #1-12 as well as Betty & Veronica #1-3 in an 88-page, 7” x 10” format. It’s not particularly spelled out, however I hope that indicates all the variant covers will be included. (And I’m crossing my fingers — however not holding my breath — that likewise indicates the hard-to-get merchant variations as well! That would be a most-cool Christmas present! How’s about it, Jingles?). I’m not providing all the cover artists, since that would wear down my fingerprints, however here’s a few: Fiona Staples, Adam Hughes, Annie Wu, Veronica Fish, J. Scott Campbell, Stephanie Buscema, Francesco Francavilla, Chip Zdarsky, Marguerite Sauvage, Jaime Hernandez, Rebekah Isaacs, David Mack, Allison Sohn, Rachel Stott, as well as lots of more.

DOC BRUCE BANNER, BELTED BY GAMMA RAYS… (sniff…)

Rocket Raccoon #1

Because marvel is marvel (and never mark Twain shall meet), they have about one more lots new #1s offered for ordering this month. according to usual, we don’t understand which are really series as well as which are just unannounced miniseries. (We bet marvel doesn’t understand either — up until sales come in, as well as magically series ended up being miniseries depending upon those numbers.) Some seem to be shoring up what seems to be the franchise which may potentially take the location of the soon-to-be-eliminated (?) mutant titles. So there are lots of new “space” titles, a lot of of which revolve around the Guardians of the Galaxy (and I’m sure, coincidentally, a new upcoming movie). These include Gamora #1, Star-Lord #1, Rocket Raccoon #1, as well as Nova #1.

Slapstick #1

There’s likewise a new Hulk #1 — which is rational considering that they seemingly (SPOILER ALERT! Seriously, does any individual not understand this by now?) killed off the old one in Civil war II. It’s mostly got a red cover, BTW… There’s likewise a new Hawkeye #1, which stars Kate Bishop solo (YAY!!!), which I’m sure will make everybody question about what Clint “Hulk killer …um, Hawkeye” Barton’s present condition will be. as well as then there’s Slapstick #1, which has got to be just for copyright extension reasons, right? RIGHT? Last, however not least, IVX #1, which means Inhumans vs. X-Men. It will most likely be a great deal of terminate as well as brimstone coming down from the skies! Rivers as well as seas boiling! Forty years of darkness! Earthquakes, volcanoes… The dead rising from the grave! Human sacrifice, dogs as well as cats living together… mass hysteria! You know… And, a lot of likely, if all of those variant covers are to be believed, a great deal of dead mutants. Um… yay?!

Monsters Unleashed Prelude

Plus, Kirby Monster fans (calling out Karl Kesel now!) must not miss the new Monsters Unleashed Prelude paperback out in January collecting 264 pages of pre-Marvel world monster stories! quite scary, huh, kids!

KC CARLSON SAYS: speaking of Supergirl, we were having a discussion at Westfield east the other day about which DC character was the most screwed-up general continuity-wise (historically speaking, of course) — as well as so I suggested Supergirl, because of her seemingly limitless reboots as well as even identities. To which fellow Westfield columnist Wayne Markley responded, “Sounds like that must be your next column.” must it? comments below, please.

WESTFIELD COMICS is not accountable for the silly things that KC says. particularly that thing that truly irritated you. Yes, the end of this column shamefully borrows memorized dialogue from both Ghostbusters as well as count Floyd/SCTV. I grew up weird. This is exactly how all of us talked, all the time… Still do, I guess…

The Animated Injustice motion picture Is A fantastic telling Of DC Comics’ ‘Worst’ story

a lot of people first encountered DC Comics’ Injustice, a 1-on-1 battling game featuring new versions of famous heroes. shortly after the game, which had a very limited narrative, DC naturally produced an Injustice comic series. This year, they gave the Injustice story the animated motion picture treatment. as per normal from DC’s animation side, the motion picture is a faithful and moving adaptation. The problem is that the Injustice story is rough if you love any of these characters. Batman and Superman are mostly allies, but their confrontations are always epic. Yet, in this version of the tale, the cost of this squabbling between gods and men is exceptionally high.

If you take pleasure in any version of Injustice, you must like this animated movie. It hits all the crucial beats, and while not as over-the-top as the game, the fights deliver. If you want a panel-by-panel adaptation of the comics’ or game’s entire story, this is not that. It’s a tight retelling that’s a enjoy for die-hards and a great entry point for those who don’t know what Injustice is about.  The cast features talent like Anson mount (Batman), Gillian Jacobs (a pitch-perfect Harley Quinn), and Kevin Pollak (double-duty as the Joker and Pa Kent). even if they eventually decide to do this in live-action, this feels like the remarkable version of this story. but this story stinks and I don’t like the way it makes me feel. Let’s talk about it.

Spoilers for the Injustice game, animated movie, and comic series to follow.

The Animated Injustice motion picture Hurts a lot more because the Heroes look a lot more Familiar

image by means of Warner Bros.

One cool thing about both the game and the comic series is that all of our favorite DC characters (save for Plastic Man) have entirely different looks. So, there’s already an element of distance. This series takes the inciting occurrence of the classic 1990s Elseworlds story Kingdom Come but increases the casualty count by several orders of magnitude. bored with Batman, Joker heads to Metropolis and facilitates the death of Lois Lane. using Scarecrow’s concern gas, he tricks Superman into killing Lois Lane, who he just discovered was pregnant with his child. Also, the Flash gets taken out, too. To make matters worse, once Lois dies, a dead-man’s switch is tripped on a nuclear bomb. Metropolis and its 11 million citizens are wiped out. mad with grief, Superman kills the Joker with a punch. From there, the story asks, “What if Superman became Peacemaker?”

Again, this story shares a lot of DNA with Kingdom Come, from Superman running a super-prison to wonder woman being his closest ally. Yet, things just play out so much a lot more tragically. When I say that this is DC’s “worst” story, I indicate in “this is the darkest timeline” way. The Flash is beheaded in the opening, and then Metropolis is destroyed. The Justice league breaks up. They start taking sides, with Damien Wayne’s Robin and Dick Grayson’s Nightwing at odds. In a moment of anger, Damien inadvertently kills Dick. It’s brutal in any version of the story. Yet, beware when at this part in the Injustice animated movie, you might find yourself a grown adult tearing up at cartoon with cursing.

Bloody, High Body Count, but at least this version of Injustice Ends

Where the comic suffers, unfortunately, is that in buy to keep the serial story going, things just have to keep getting worse. This movie, however, is still fun despite all of the tragedy. Oliver Hudson’s Plastic man and Reid Scott’s green Arrow delight whenever they are on screen. Harley is fun, though her improvement to Hero Harley isn’t given as much space as in the comics. It is, by its very nature, an incomplete story in terms of the expansive scope of other iterations of the Injustice universe. I mean, for Orko’s sake, in the comics they teamed up with He-Man of all people. possibly like those storytellers, I lost the plot around there. and as interesting as this story is, I have little desire to pick it up again. I’ll read the final-ever issue. Maybe. The animated motion picture might be my favorite version of Injustice because it’s a much tighter, a lot more linear storyline than the games or comics.

In fact, I strongly suspect a lot more films in the Injustice series will be coming. There is something very appealing about seeing one of the worst timelines for these characters we all take pleasure in so much. So, if that’s your bag, these films (or the games and comics) are for you. but for fans like me—who only really like to dabble in the malaise—the animated Injustice motion picture delivers a quick hit of that sweet, sweet tragedy. And, you can go rewatch your favorite animated Superman afterwards as a palliative.

Even if this is the only Injustice story that gets adapted, it continues the streak of the DC animated features division delivering solid adaptations of comics storylines. The shared-continuity universe that ended with Justice league Dark: Apokolips war did the new 52 better than the comics, in my opinion. Whether you’ve took pleasure in Warner Bros. DC motion picture output over the past decade or not, there is no denying that these animated films deliver fun comic stories for teenage-and-older audiences.

The Injustice Animated motion picture is currently available from your preferred motion picture provider.

John Carter: Warlord of Mars #1 J. Scott Campbell cover

Ron Marz is the popular writer of such comics as Witchblade, green Lantern, Artifacts, and more. now he’s taking on John Carter: Warlord of Mars for Dynamite. Westfield’s Roger Ash contacted Marz to learn much more about the upcoming book.

Westfield: What attracted you to the project?

Ron Marz: I’ve loved Edgar Rice Burroughs in general and John Carter in particular because boyhood. These are stories I’ve always wanted to tell. I know I keep saying that it’s a dream come true whenever anybody asks about this project, but it’s absolutely the truth. I’ve wanted to write John Carter forever.

John Carter: Warlord of Mars #1 Bart Sears cover.

Westfield: What can readers look forward to in the book? Is there anything you can say about the story?

Marz: I wanted to make sure that the series, and especially the first issue, are as available as possible. These stories are for longtime John Carter fans, as well as readers who have never went to this world before. The John Carter stories are the blueprint for so much of what came after: star Wars, star Trek, Avatar, Superman and so numerous more. I want to introduce newcomers to this wonderful world and these terrific characters, as well as offer up something that resonates with the faithful readership. The first story arc, “Invaders of Mars,” runs for six issues, and puts John Carter in the position of having to save his adopted world from an alien invasion.

John Carter: Warlord of Mars J.G. Jones cover.

Westfield: will you be introducing new characters?

Marz: The villain of the first story arc is a new character, and hopefully a villain worthy of John Carter. John is a virtual superman on Mars, so I wanted to introduce an antagonist for him who is every bit as powerful. The villain is John’s opposite number in a terrific numerous ways. There will be other new characters introduced as we go forward, but John, Dejah Thoris and Tars Tarkas will always be the core.

John Carter: Warlord of Mars preview art by Abhishek Malsuni.

Westfield: You’re working with artist Abhishek Malsuni on the book. What can you say about his contribution?

Marz: I actually worked as the editor on a project Abhishek drew for an Indian publisher, and was really amazed by his talent. He’s still pretty young, so I think the work he’s doing is even much more outstanding for someone who’s still learning and getting better with every page. When the opportunity for this series came about, Abhishek was the first name I put forward for the art duties. even though he wasn’t awfully familiar with the John Carter mythos, he’s really taken to it fantastically.

Westfield: any closing comments?

Marz: I couldn’t be happier doing this series. They’ll have to pry it out of my arthritic fingers years from now. So much of our heroic and adventure traditions come from John Carter, it’s an honor to be working on the original that started it all.

INTERVIEW: RYAN FERRIER ON IDW’S D4VE

Interviews as well as Columns

D4VE #1 cover by Fiona Staples

Ryan Ferrier is a writer as well as letterer whose work includes The siblings James as well as Tiger attorney from Challenger Comics. You may have likewise seen Tiger attorney in Image’s Shutter. Now, his book with artist Valentin Ramon, D4VE, has discovered a house at IDW. Westfield’s Roger Ash contacted Ferrier to discover more about this book that takes location in a world where the robots have conquered humanity.

Westfield: I like the idea of a robot having a mid-life crisis. Where did the concept for this series come from?

Ryan Ferrier: The genuine story–the meat of this journey–comes from D4VE’s mid-life crisis, perhaps even more than the huge action-invasion stuff. Don’t get me wrong, there is a great deal of that in the book, as well as it’s super fun. however really, this is a tale of breaking free from a life that is completely unfulfilling. feeling stuck as well as trapped in all elements of the day to day, understanding you can do more. That most definitely is a feeling that resonates with me. I felt completely trapped extremely early on in my life–I worked at a soul-sucking desk task just like D4VE, as well as there is a great deal of me as well as Valentin inside this series. I understand Valentin can associate a great deal to it, as well as that’s what made this story as well as this partnership with him mean so much to us. however we likewise didn’t want it to be all doom as well as gloom. There’s definitely a great deal of real-life, relatable struggles–especially those that include entering your 30’s–but we likewise wished to cut with that with some truly exciting, over-the-top action, as well as we tried our hardest to make the book truly funny. We’re definitely proud of what we believe is a great balance between all that, while still keeping an underlying message. It’s been extremely cathartic for both Valentin as well as I to be able to craft our own lives into the story. For some reason, having the book set in this odd-yet-familiar future, full of robots, just added one more level to the fun as well as world-building of D4VE.

D4VE #1 preview page 1

Westfield: What can you tell visitors about the story as well as who are a few of the primary characters they’ll meet?

Ferrier: D4VE–the former star defense-bot turned desk-job-slave–is the primary character of the story, as well as he’s extremely much a flawed character, albeit somebody we wished to be relatable, sympathetic, as well as eventually redeemable. though he is physically eliminated from humanity–as are all the characters–he extremely well might be somebody you satisfy on the street tomorrow. D4VE learns as well as grows as the story goes on, as well as is rather complex; not unlike any type of human character. His wife, 54LLY, is an important character in the book, as well as in many methods acts as a tether to D4VE’s struggle. If there were any type of genuine “hero” in the book, it would definitely be her. one more character that quickly ended up being our preferred to produce is 5COTTY; while I won’t state exactly how he fits into the story, as that occurs at the end of problem one, he is at very first the overall opposite of D4VE: he’s young, brash, fearless, as well as likewise a giant, unfiltered, trash-talking, potty-mouthed bit jerk. He’s the youngster you like to hate, as well as he truly does grow on you, just as he did Valentin as well as I. Admittedly, he’s been the most fun to work with, as well as we’re truly excited for visitors to get to understand him. The rest of the cast is fleshed out with some truly fun, unique characters, as well as we hope that people dig them. We put a great deal of care into producing a diverse cast, each with their own arc as well as voice.

Westfield: You mention “big action-invasion stuff.” Is there anything more you can state about that?

Ferrier: D4VE isn’t completely a slice-of-life comic, not by a long shot…there is some series action happening, as well as the fate of the 34RTH, as we phone call it, is most definitely in D4VE’s hands. There are some truly big, interesting action set pieces, as well as a great deal of body parts torn off as well as fists flying with things as well as weirdo battle cries. The more D4VE’s life spirals out of control, the more that is showed in the dilemma that befalls all of the robots, as well as just wait up until you see what Valentin’s cooked up, visually. There are pages, sequences, that made my eyes bug out the very first time I saw them. We went into D4VE wanting to push whatever to the limit, as well as even with the action, we’re quite excited for people to see exactly how nutty we’re getting with it.

D4VE #1 preview page 2

Westfield: Your collaborator on the book is Valentin Ramon. What can you state about his contribution to the book?

Ferrier: There truly are no words to explain exactly how important Valentin has been to D4VE. There would be no D4VE without him. Valentin is absolutely astonishing at building worlds with a succinct tone as well as realism, however likewise an impeccable interest to detail. He’s a genius. as well as he’s totally hilarious. He as well as I both have a extremely similar handle the world as well as mindset as well as approach to pushing things, so when we came together to do this, it was a breath of air. It ended up being completely realized the moment we hit the ground running, as well as it’s been outstanding every page since. Valentin as well as I informed one one more with every beat, as well as the partnership has been something that creators try for with every project. I have no question Valentin is going to be a huge, mega-star, as well as I’m thrilled that I had the possibility to experience his wizardry early on in both our careers. I would, no concerns asked, work once again with Valentin any type of day, as well as we are definitely working together on much more.

Westfield: D4VE started as a digital comic. Why did you choose to bring it to print?

Ferrier: We were really, truly lucky to have D4VE discover a house with Monkeybrain. Chris (Roberson) as well as Allison (Baker), who run Monkeybrain, have been so incredibly encouraging, welcoming, as well as supportive since day one, as well as the entire partnership has been incredible. So we’re beyond grateful to them for the possibility to have D4VE among a household of such excellent work. moving ahead from there, Valentin as well as I always wished to discover a house for D4VE in the print-market, as well as we are of program thrilled to have that house in IDW. The icing on the cake being that the series is getting the single-issue treatment as well. We’re just so pumped that D4VE has a possibility to reach new visitors as well as ideally they dig it as much as the digital-first audience has. The response to the book has been overwhelming, which is amazing; being such a personal story, there’s always that fear that includes putting something with a great deal of heart in it out into the ether. It’s an incredibly interesting time, we can’t wait!

Curb Stomp #1

Westfield: You’re likewise composing Curb Stomp for BOOM! Studios. Is there anything you’d like to state about it?

Ferrier: Curb Stomp is a book I’ve been working on with Devaki Neogi (artist) as well as Neil Lalonde (colorist) for rather a while now, as well as we’re over the moon to have that at BOOM! Studios. They are just an outstanding publisher to work with, as well as are dedicated to making excellent comics. That being said, it’s a great deal different from D4VE. It’s a genuine street-level, punk rock survival story about an all-woman street gang called The Fever, who discover themselves actually fighting for their lives as well as their turf in the midst of a major gang war spanning three boroughs. Devaki is just incredible, as well as I believe her work is going to strike people’s minds, as well as Neil’s coloring is seriously next-level. We’re all truly tapped into this bright, vibrant, punk rock vibe, as well as I believe there’s going to be parts in this series that decrease some jaws. like D4VE, there is a great deal of heavy reality we’re trying to drop–a great deal of grim stuff that occurs right outside our doorsteps–and we’re getting away with some truly ultra-violent stuff. however it’s going to be a ton of fun, as well as we’re proud of the characters we’re bringing with it. problem one is coming out in February, I believe, as well as the response to the statement has been really, truly cool.

D4VE #1 membership Cover by Valentin Ramon

Westfield: any type of closing comments?

Ferrier: To state I’m excited for 2015 is an understatement, as well as I’ve been truly fortunate to line up this work–none of that might have been done without the assist as well as support of so many people, including the fans as well as readers–so to everybody I state say thanks to you for making this scruffy nerf-herder’s dream move to a reality. There’s likewise one or two more surprises for 2015 coming genuine soon, as well as I couldn’t be more excited.
